Team GB chief Andy Anson has launched a passionate defence of Britain’s gold medal haul at the Paris Olympics, despite the fact it reached the lowest point since Athens in 2004.
GB athletes notched only 14 golds in France to leave them seventh in the medal table.
However, their overall medal haul of 65 surpassed that of Tokyo three years ago, and matched the total Team GB won at London 2012.
“It’s been an unbelievably competitive Olympic Games,” said Anson. “We passed a thousand medals during this event, which is incredible and we have a lot to celebrate.
“The breadth of success is important, in terms of the resonance it has around the country and impact it has on our communities.
“It’s frustrating to be seventh in the medal table. We would have liked to have been in the top five again, but the overall number and breadth of medals we’ve won should be celebrated. So the final message is: Bring on LA.”
